Gurugram :  The Japanese delegation led by Dr. Juniya Onishi (Project Leader, Sustainable Land Management in Dryland Areas) International Center for Agricultural Sciences Japan, participated in the international conference organized at Sri Guru Gobind Singh Tri Centenary University, Gurugram.

The delegation included Dr. Kayo Matsui, Soil Scientist; Dr. Guenwu Li, Economist; Dr. Kazuhisa Koda, Engineer from Japan was involved. With this delegation, Prof. (Dr.) Ashok Kumar, Dean, Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, SGT University and Dr. Gajendra Yadav, Senior Scientist, ICAR- Central Soil Salinity Resort Institute Karnal were also present.

The Japanese delegation participated in the International Conference held at SGT University and presented their research work on stubble management and its use to control soil salinity and improve drainage in saline sodic soils at Karnal.

A machine called cut-soiler, invented in Japan, is used to collect the stubble from the fields and add it to the soil at a depth of 45- 50 cm. This machine is performing dual purpose, i.e. to incorporate organic matter into the soil and improve drainage and water seepage in the soil and prevent farmers from burning the stubble, which occurs in and around Delhi NCR from October to December. causes pollution during the months of

The Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Sgt University, is in contact with Dr. Hide Ome, Director, Tropical Agricultural Research Front, JIRCAS, Japan, in charge of one of the projects on hydroponic farming, and several multinational companies such as Panasonic, Mitsubishi and Hitachi are also connected. The project is in the initial stage of discussion between the Department of Science and Technology, India, ICAR- IARI and JIRCAS.

Pro. Ashok Kumar apprised the delegation of the achievements of the SGT University especially the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and the infrastructure and laboratory facilities available for the students and researchers. Dr. Onishi appreciated the management and faculty of SGT University for their warm welcome and better stay. Significantly, future collaborative activities between the Japan International Center for Agricultural Sciences (JIRCAS) and SGT University may be explored in the key areas of management of drought and high temperature stress, hydroponics and urban agriculture.

During this, the delegation of scientists also met Manmohan Singh Chawla Managing Trustee Dashmesh Educational Charitable Trust at his office at SGT University Gurugram.
